As soon as you set foot in the legendary city of Venice, you’re bound to be enchanted with the sights of canals, bridges, romantic gondolas, and the breathtaking Grand Canal. The best time to explore this ‘City of Water’ is during the low season from November – April. During this time, the average temperatures are 30 – 40 degrees Fahrenheit, crowds are less, and you’ll get some of the best deals on room rates and sightseeing tours. Remember to bring your rain boots for the occasional high tides (Acqua alta) and flooding. In summer, from June – August, Venice is packed with tourists, and hotel rates are at their peak. Expect average temperatures in the range of 70 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and a somewhat strong smell around the canals at this time of the year. In the shoulder months from March – May or September – November, you will find that the crowds are less, temperatures are pleasant and room rates are reasonable. If you wish to experience the grand ‘Carnevale’ event, when the Venetian streets are filled with large mask-wearing crowds and a host of festivities, plan your trip in the month of February.

Just stop a passerby and feel free to ask for directions. Keep an eye out for the landmarks, and find the nearest stop for a vaporetto or water taxi. Do not rely on GPS or mobile apps as they often fail when exploring Venice’s alleys and canals.
