One of the largest cities in Europe, Vienna is a place of beauty and history that welcomes millions of visitors every year. Summer is the busiest tourist season and the most expensive, because of the comfortable weather. Highs average 75 degrees Fahrenheit with the temperature rarely dipping below 66 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Autumn can also be busy, especially in the earlier months, but it tends to die down as it gets colder. Highs range from 44 – 73 degrees Fahrenheit, so be sure to pack extra layers and be prepared for the chance of rain. Winter months are quieter and only attract tourists who don’t mind the cold, with highs of 37 – 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Christmas in particular is a magical time to travel to Vienna as it’s lit by decorations and has fantastic Christmas markets to explore. Spring is the slowest tourist season, so you can look for deals on hotels and flights. With highs of 50 – 75 degrees Fahrenheit and a fair chance of rain, be prepared with proper clothing and rain gear.

Vienna International Airport (VIE)

VIE is Austria’s largest airport and is located 11 miles southeast of central Vienna. Because it is a hub for tourism, there are many options to get you from the airport into Vienna.

Trains

When it comes to trains, you have 3 options. The cheapest option is the public S-Bahn for €3.70 EUR. Hop on the S7 line and take it to the Wien Mitte train station, a 25-minute ride. Another choice is Railjet, which will take 26 minutes and cost €4.10 EUR. Take it to Vienna main station to get downtown. The last option is to take the CAT train into Vienna. It travels nonstop from the airport to downtown in 16 minutes and will cost you €12.00 EUR.

Buses

Hop on a bus with Vienna Airport Lines written on the outside. It will take you downtown in 22 minutes for €8.00 EUR, and you can get off at Schwedenplatz. Be prepared for limited space as it is a popular mode of transport.

Taxis

Hail a taxi after exiting the terminal. To make sure you’re getting a legitimate taxi, look for a roof taxi sign and TX at the end of the license plate. A ride to the city center will take around 20 minutes and cost approximately €36.00 EUR.

Car Rentals

If you’re keen on driving around the city, look for deals on car rentals with momondo.

How to get around in Vienna?

Vienna knows how to handle the throngs of tourists that flock to the city every year. There are many Vienna transportation options to make it easy for you to get where you want to go.

Public Transportation

Vienna offers coordinated public transit, including the S-Bahn urban railway, the subway, buses, and trams. One ride will cost €2.20 EUR, but the best way to simplify travel is to activate a Vienna Travelcard. Travelcards can be activated at any subway stop, as well as inside buses and trams. You can buy a 24, 48, or 72-hour card that will act as your ticket for any public transit. If you want a deal that includes museums and restaurants, the Vienna City Card is another option that has a choice of 24-72 hours.

Taxis

Taxis are available for those who don’t want to take public transportation. Expect to pay a meter drop of €3.80 EUR and then €2.51 EUR per mile. Uber is also active in Vienna, with a meter drop of €1.00 Euro and then €1.25 Euro per mile after that.

Car Rentals

If you want to take a day trip out of the city, renting a car is a great idea. Rental prices can go as low as €15.00 EUR a day for smaller vehicles. Driving in the city itself is not recommended as it has many narrow and one-way streets.
